First a little background info. I live in Dom's home town of Stockport. I went to the same sixth form college as Dom, albeit about two or three years after he left. We had the same Theatre Studies A-Level teacher, a man who I'll refer to as 'RH' (just in case RH is mugged by a fangirl).
My fan encounter happened December 2003, Christmas Eve Eve (y'know, the day before Christmas Eve itself). I was temping at the music & DVD store 'HMV' in Stockport, working behind the counter.
I was having a very crappy day. I'd argued with a close friend that orning, and then the shop was heaving with angry Christmas shoppers and we were understaffed. I was dealing with a customer when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a man standing in the queue who looked shockingly like a Mr Dominic Monaghan. "Holy fudge" (well, not fudge, but you know
what I mean), I thought, "That IS Dom."
I rushed through the next customers but despite my best efforts, Dom was served by the assistant manager (who had no clue who he was). So I can't give away any secrets as to what Dom was buying. But Dom did catch
my eye, spotted me looking at him, although he did seem a little surprised when, as he was leaving, I dashed out from behind the counter to bounce up to him (and I do mean bounce).
"Excuse me, sorry for being a geeky fangirl..."
Dom at this point prepared himself for the usual spiel.
"But did you go to ****blank**** college?"
Dom looked surprised. "Um, yes."
"And did you have RH as a theatre studies teacher?"
Dom - "Yes. This is weird. Why, are you in his class?"
Me - "No. I left college about four years ago. But I was in his class. He remembers you."
Dom - "He knows who I am?"
Me - "Well... he knows you were the guy in Hetty Wainthrope. He brags about that. He hasn't actually made the Lord of the Rings connection yet."
Dom - "Sounds like RH."
Me - "Yeah."
Dom and I shake hands.
Dom - "I'm Dom. Nice to meet you."
Me - "Nice to meet you. Bye!"
Dom - "See you later!"
And he left the shop, and I went back to my til. And bounced around like an eight year old on too much sugar for the rest of the day, much to the bemusement of the rest of the staff and the other customers.
So yeah, that's it. My memory was a little fuzzy (addled by excitement) but I do remember that he had the foppish, blonde-streaked hair cut at the time. And he was wearing nice aftershave, and had a good hand shake. Oh, and was quite short (lol!) He was lovely, especially considering what day it was, how stressed he probably was, and how little he was probably expecting being mugged by a shop assistant.
I was tempted to ask the security guys for a copy of the CCTV footage of the day, but I think that might have seemed a little weird... |
