Comic-Con     |     24 July 2004     |     Patty

There he was, the most fuzziest of fuzzy men was just a mere 10 feet away from me. My heart raced and my legs went a little limp, but that's a normal thing when meeting a movie star, for me at least. I lifted my little digital camera and recorded him walk across the little store/stand and look at a few comic book items… odd: I look at the movie now and notice that he glanced at me twice in the whole 12 second movie (that's really weird since I AM 10ft away AND in a large crowd!). Anyways I switched over to the camera mode, trying to take a few photos, but the security guards were in the way, oh well. My legs begin to give life back into them, but my heart never stopped beating so fast. He walked over to the east side of the huge convention center wall which was a long line of comic books. I followed, of course, his trail of security men, cameras, and elderly ladies.

He was at the far end of the check-out table as I finally emerged through the crowd of passerbyers. I took a few photos of him ask the owner of the stand a few questions, and then readied my camera once again on the movie mode. Just then he came walking by to enter the store/stand. When he was arm's distance away, my legs decided to take a break again. He passed me and two other fans (some elderly big ladies, who just stood there in awe) and with a quick glance to them then a more focused glance to me he said “Hey ladies!”

My mouth opened to speak, about to ask him to sign my sketchbook, but a security guard came in between us as he left, “Sorry miss, he's really needs his space right now.” He said, obviously missing one of the lady fans behind him who ran up to Dom and asked for an autograph. I got new hopes from this and moved to where he previously was, at the check-out table, hearing the two ladies squeal quietly about how he said hi to them. I switched my camera to movie mode, and filmed him looking for a comic book. Suddenly this guy, my age (late teenager-ish) began to talk to me…freaky! (I don't know who he was but he looked scary!)

“I wish he would just turn around for us to get a picture of him.” He said to me.“Oh I know! I wish he could sign some stuff too!“Yeah… I'll have him sign my forehead or something!” “What?! It'll come off though!” “But-he-I'd have touched him then!” Weirdo! “Hey,” he continued, “if we call out his name, you think he'll turn around to talk to us?” “I doubt it.” I stopped filming Dom, preparing my sketchbook for a signature.“Let's try it at least.” I nodded an agreement, “Ready?” he asked, we counted together (or maybe it was just me… I don't know about him) “One, two, three-!”

Dom turned around as if on command and glanced at us (psych-ism man, I swear!), giving the ‘you rang?' expression (he must have really good hearing, it was REALLY noisy in that place). “Can I shake your hand?” the guy asked Dom, sticking his hand out over the table towards Dom.
“Sure!” Dom said lightly, shaking his hand. It somehow reminded me when in the old days when men wear suits everywhere shook hands (odd, neh?). Then he turned to me, giving the ‘you wanted to say something?' lovely glance at me. I never noticed how pretty blue his eyes are! Man! The pictures tone them down or something cause they were on FIRE! Anyways, I gave my haggling smile and asked nicely, “Can you sign my sketchbook?” He held up some brown book in his right hand and a ‘just a moment' signal in his left hand, “Hang on, lemme pay for this real quick.” He turned away to go and pay the lady at the register (a few feet away) and who took his place? The wonderful security guard! “No autographs right now,“ he said in a worn voice, “ He's quite tired and he'll be leaving after this.” Yeah right. “Not even one?” I asked innocently. “Nope, sorry.” I gave my sad face and said, “Look, sad face! Please? Pleeease?”

The security guard shook his head, the long black hair flowed a little (“He must use Herbal Essence.” I thought). Then he began to make way for Dom to walk off to another section of the convention, while Dom was slowly turning back to me. He stared at me (kinda made me get a little funny feeling by him doing that) with a ‘what am I doing again?” expression. I held up both hands, sketchbook in one and an open hand in the other and gave another haggle smile, “How ‘bout that autograph?” I asked him in a commercial-like voice. “Right.” He held out his hands to receive the book.

I gave it to him, hoping to touch his hand or something, but no such luck. He looked at me again (I'm not sure if he took his eyes off of me…he probably did but I've been glancing from his deep blue eyes to my hands to his hands to everywhere else) and with a warmer voice stated, “Meet me over there, kay?” “Right-o!” I said and began to make my way through the crowd of goggling women and passerbyers with many “Excuse me”s and “Pardon me”s. I met up with him at the entrance of the store/stand. Between the camera flashes, people gawking, and security people, he managed to hand me my sketchbook back. Just then the crowd of fans seemed to have enough courage to ask Dom for an autograph as well and rushed closer to him (to cut him off his wandering destination or something) and began to squish me into a guy (poor dude, he was just wandering by), I yelped a “Hey!” and then said loudly, “I'm getting squished!”

Apparently Dom was as well, he was recovering from being squished between his five body guards. They trudged off towards the south end of the convention center. I sighed…I finally met my number one movie star love!

Oh crap! I needed to get my friend one too! I had sworn to her that I would do my best to get her an autograph of whoever I met, and it would be painful if I didn't try to actually keep to my word. I rushed after the few stragglers of fans and found him at I believe a Star gate stand (you know, Star Gate SG-1 TV show stuff?) asking the manager of the stand a few
questions. I opened my sketchbook to a blank section, took a deep breath, and walked towards him once more…

…only to be stopped by that relentless security guard (He's like a cockroach, he never goes away!). “No autographs right now,” he sounded like a recorder, playing over and over and over. But his excuse this time was actually kinda funny: “He's really tired, and he may get a little claustrophobic if your too near, so take pictures at a distance. Really? That was new, “Is seven feet too close?” I asked mockingly.

Just then, by magic, Dom appears between me and the security guard, giving me a warm but hurried smile as he slowly passes. I give him a wincing smile to him in return, giving the hint of “I don't like your body guards much”. He just continued to stare and steps over a little roped line (you know how when you wait in line, there are a couple of ropes or chains to organize the line…well this one was one of them). “Sorry, “he said with a small smile, then bent over the glass casing to inspect some action figures. I sighed…this isn't going to work. I give up! I walked off and away from that lovely man…
