Actor Dominic Monaghan plays the role of Charlie Pace in the popular American series "Lost" which debuted for Indian viewers on Star Movies this September. Here is a one-on-one chat with the actor who made a splash with the Hollywood film "Lord of The Rings."
So what appealed to you about "Lost"?
DOMINIC: I had met the people behind the series and was kind of bowled over by the fact that there appeared to be a certain amount of sarcasm and wit and irony in the room, which is kind of hard to find in American television now. So I was impressed. And the character of Charlie at this point was a 45-year-old guy who had had his career and been spat out the other side. We started talking about the idea of what if Charlie was someone who had had the merest glimpse of success. And then, things started to go back. Wouldn't that be more of a frustrated, ambitious character? So I went away, came back a week later, and they reworked on the idea of Charlie to be someone a bit younger. And from then on, we just had fun.
How do you describe your character in "Lost"?
DOMINIC: I play a young man named Charlie Pace who is a relatively failed rock star. I think he has delusions of grandeur. I think he thinks that he's much better than he actually is. He is in a band called Drive Shaft who had a couple of hits in America, probably played on "TRL" for about 10 weeks or so, maybe had a video or two on MTV and VH1.
"Lost" is shot on an island. Is the fact that you have to be away something that helps you just to choose a project, because it seems you love to be away from home?
DOMINIC: I don't really have any real understanding of the word home. I moved a lot when I was a kid. My home was where my parents were. And since I became an adult, my home now is wherever I see fit. I don't really see myself as affiliated to any particular country. I'm kind of a citizen of the world, and I just love seeing different things. And I'm not necessarily leaving anything behind apart from my friends, who tend to always visit me anyway.
Did you find it hard to pick a role after "Lord of the Rings"?
DOMINIC: It wasn't necessarily my first role after "Lord of the Rings." I did three films last year. But in terms of something international that people are going to know, I've been struggling for a long time with being kind of typecast as an adorable, sweet, kind-hearted, Furby-type character, which I didn't feel was something I needed to do again. So my challenge as an actor, as a person, is always to continue to do something different and expand in each thing that I do.
Did you ever want to be a rock star?
DOMINIC: Sure. Doesn't everyone?
If acting is your first love, what's number two?
DOMINIC: Manchester United.
